Vandalia, a town steeped in history, has a rich heritage as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Recognizing the importance of highlighting this landmark and honoring the journey of enslaved people, President Beverly Young commissioned a mural by Mural Makers of New Jersey. The mural, originally designed by local artist Diriki Mose, depicts Vandalia's role in the Underground Railroad.

Mose, inspired by his mother's research, created the mural in the early 1990s. The artwork showcases a journey from slavery to freedom, starting with a person fleeing captivity and ending with a reunion with family. The mural also features significant local landmarks, including Ramptown, a town later discovered to have been a key stop on the Underground Railroad.

Vandalia played a crucial role in the fight against slavery, and the mural serves as a powerful reminder of its history. Join the community in celebrating this legacy at the annual Underground Railroad Days event on July 13 and 14.
